PSHE

Living and Learning with Faith, Friendship and Fun

Subject leader: Hannah Jones

Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education.

  • Department for Education

At Charing CE Primary, we use the Kapow Primary scheme of work to deliver the statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education (RSE) set out by the Department for Education. It also fulfils the National Curriculum requirement to teach Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) and goes beyond the statutory requirements by referring to the PSHE Association Programme of Study (recommended by the Department for Education.)

Progression Narrative

We believe that PSHE education helps children and young people stay healthy, safe and prepared for life – and work – in modern Britain. Our PSHE education is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to successfully manage their lives – now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE Education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.

PSHE encompasses many areas of study and we have tailored our PSHE programme to reflect the needs of our pupils. Our PSHE Kapow curriculum is categorised into five key areas, which we return to in each year group, making pupil’s prior and future learning clear and shows how what you are teaching fits into their wider learning journey. Year 6 also have a further key area: Identity.

  • Family and relationships
  • Health and well-being
  • Safety and the changing body
  • Citizenship
  • Economic wellbeing
  • Identity (Year 6 only)

Intent:

Charing CE Primary School believes that PSHE and RSE should be delivered in a safe and supportive environment to promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of all pupils to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

We intend to deliver engaging lessons that are knowledgeable, enjoyable and accessible to all which celebrate the diversity within our community whilst respecting and promoting the British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths. The teaching of PSHE begins in Early Years where pupils are taught how to take turns, how to treat each other with kindness, consideration and respect, the importance of honesty and truthfulness, permission seeking and giving, and the concept of personal privacy through to KS2 where this knowledge is developed further.

The Relationships Education, RSE, and Health Education (England) Regulations 2019 have made Relationships Education compulsory in all primary schools. Sex education is not compulsory in primary schools however the Department for Education strongly recommends this should also include age-appropriate Sex Education. Parents are informed annually when these lessons are being planned and are invited to see or discuss the teaching materials prior to teaching the children.

Implementation:

In Early Years, there are seven areas of inter-connected learning and development with personal, social and emotional development being a prime area of learning. We focus heavily on personal, social and emotional development in Early Years to ensure the children thrive and work towards meeting their Early Learning Goals by the end of the year.

The KS1 and KS2 children are taught once a week by teaching staff following the Kapow Primary scheme of work. The aims of our PSHE and RSE curriculum are further enhanced within the delivery of our wider curriculum and daily worship as staff continually promote the values of PSHE and RSE as they are fundamental to our school life and ethos.

Impact:

By teaching PSHE and RSE we expect to develop the whole child into being respectful, kind and compassionate young people who are capable of making safe and informed decisions and developing positive relationships with other children and adults.

At the end of each key stage, the children are expected to know, apply and understand the knowledge learnt specified in the relevant programme of study.

We use different types of formative assessment to determine children’s understanding and inform teachers planning and our topics are adapted each year to provide a clear and concise progression through each year group to ensure the National Curriculum objectives are met.
